HAPPENING IN THE CITIES

A mom with a pram in COPENHAGEN

This summer I changed my bicycle and the Copenhagen bicycle lanes for long strolls, public transport and a pram with my baby. I have been exploring all corners of the city as part of my activities in my new role as a mom.

There are many new parents exploring the city with a pram every day. This realisation allowed me to identify some areas of opportunity that would benefit and enhance the urban experience of a new parent with a pram. In between changing diapers and city tours, I’ve gathered examples and illustrated ideas that I’m happy to share here!

INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE DAY! (POST IN SPANISH!)

THE EMPTY BIRD BOX: CITIES AND NATURE

I have always believed that I am a city person. I mean, who would not love cities? They offer everything. An energised environment of city life: people everywhere, movement, lights, colors and sounds.  Great opportunities for development, several options for leisure activities, culture, sports, mobility, parks… but, how many of them do they actually offer real connection with nature? It was recently that my perception of cities has changed quite a lot.

THE AIR WE BREATHE MATTERS

A city is a liveable when its urban settings shape social sustainability -meaning among others – provision of environments that promote good health for its inhabitants. The thing is that not everything in the surrounding environment that affects us is visible, for example,  AIR POLLUTION.

LIVEABILITY PERFORMANCE IN NEIGHBOURHOODS

Cities liveability is determined by people’s needs at the local scale. By putting together the residents demands, and assessing the built environment with a great sustainable approach, a toolbox can be created for post-occupancy evaluation for liveability in neighbourhoods.

URBAN LIFE IN TIMES OF PHYSICAL DISTANCING

My impressions of the urban life in times of physical distancing are 1. We must plan and design -all year friendly- cities on which seasons do not determine entirely the times to be indoors or outdoors. 2. Urgent need to evolve tourism from cities sightsee to cities of life-see en experience.; and  3. How to accelerate the “bringing back nature” to cities and reconnect people with it?

HOW IS MONTERREY'S PROGRESS TOWARDS BECOMING A SUSTAINABLE CITY?

Monterrey City has experienced a growth oriented to economic development, leaving behind the other pillars of sustainability: the environment and the society, resulting in daily life issues that threaten the wellbeing of the inhabitants and the nature. The Sustainable Development Goals were selected as the framework to understand How the city of Monterrey’s is progressing towards becoming a Sustainable City and how far it is from reaching its Sustainable Development Strategy Goals?

URBAN MOBILITY IN COPENHAGEN, A SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL APPROACH

Before moving to Copenhagen I never before used a bicycle as a transport mean and now I can easily say that it is for me the most convenient and efficient way to move around the city. Thanks to the infrastructure of active mobility I have now the opportunity to enjoy both, the natural and built landscape views while walking or going on the bike, alongside with fresh and clean air.

NEIGHBORHOOD UPSCALING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BY BUILDING USE CHANGE

The repurpose of Absalon church built during the 30’s, and its transformation into a communal hall for people to meet, share leisure activities, dine together and cowork; has made the Folkehuset Absalon not only a quite popular place to visit for both locals and tourist, but a great reference of community development and bonding, in accordance with SDG11. Sustainable cities and communities.
